Introduction
Malaysia’s water treatment chemicals market is driven by three major sectors: palm oil milling (Malaysia is the world’s 2nd largest palm oil producer), electronics/semiconductor manufacturing (Penang and Kulim Hi-Tech Park), and municipal water supply expansion. With enforcement under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (EQA) and increasing adoption of industrial water recycling, demand for PAC and PAM continues to grow. HydroChemix supplies Malaysian clients with high-performance treatment chemicals backed by fast, reliable ASEAN shipping.
Malaysia Industrial Effluent Standards
Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009 — key parameters:
| Parameter | Standard A (upstream of water intake) | Standard B (downstream) |
|---|---|---|
| pH | 6.0-9.0 | 5.5-9.0 |
| BOD (mg/L) | 20 | 50 |
| COD (mg/L) | 120 | 200 |
| TSS (mg/L) | 50 | 100 |
| Oil & Grease (mg/L) | ND (not detectable) | 10 |
Key Industries and Treatment Solutions
1. Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)
Malaysia has over 450 palm oil mills, predominantly in Sabah, Sarawak, Johor, and Pahang. The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) enforces POME discharge standards that are among the most stringent for palm oil globally. PAC (300-800 mg/L) combined with anionic PAM (3-8 mg/L) in DAF or primary clarification achieves 40-50% COD reduction and 85-95% TSS removal, significantly reducing anaerobic pond loading and helping mills meet final BOD <100 mg/L after full treatment. See our POME treatment guide for detailed optimization.
2. Electronics and Semiconductor Manufacturing
Malaysia is a global semiconductor packaging and testing hub, with major facilities in Penang (Intel, AMD, Micron) and Kulim Hi-Tech Park (Infineon, Osram). Electronics manufacturing generates wastewater containing heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Sn, Ag), fluoride (from etching), and organic solvents. PAC provides effective treatment for metal removal and fluoride precipitation, with consistently low trace metal content to avoid re-contaminating treated water. High-purity PAC (spray dried, drinking water grade) is specified for electronics applications.
3. Municipal Water Supply
Malaysia’s National Water Services Commission (SPAN) regulates drinking water quality under the Drinking Water Quality Standards (based on WHO guidelines). Water treatment plants operated by state water authorities (PBA Penang, Air Selangor, SAJ Ranhill, etc.) are progressively switching from alum to PAC for improved turbidity removal, reduced sludge, and better cold water performance. Our drinking water grade PAC meets WHO and Malaysian standards with COA documentation accepted by SPAN.
4. Rubber Glove Manufacturing
Malaysia is the world’s largest rubber glove producer (Top Glove, Hartalega, Kossan). Glove manufacturing generates wastewater with high zinc (from zinc oxide accelerator) and latex solids. PAC at 200-500 mg/L effectively removes zinc through hydroxide precipitation at pH 8-10, combined with anionic PAM for flocculation. Zn levels reduced from 50-200 mg/L to <2 mg/L for discharge compliance.
