The Science of Coagulation

Jar Testing Protocol

  1. Fill 6 beakers with 1L of raw water sample
  2. Add different coagulant doses to each beaker (e.g., 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 mg/L)
  3. Rapid mix at 150-300 RPM for 1-2 minutes
  4. Slow mix at 20-40 RPM for 15-20 minutes
  5. Allow 30 minutes settling time
  6. Measure supernatant turbidity, pH, and residual metal concentration
  7. Select dose achieving target turbidity with lowest chemical consumption

Common Operating Issues

  • Pin Floc: Too much rapid mixing energy, increase slow mix time
