How to Properly Dissolve and Dose Polyacrylamide (PAM) – Complete Guide

Proper PAM Dissolution and Dosing Guide for Water Treatment

Polyacrylamide (PAM) is one of the most widely used flocculants in water treatment. However, many operators make critical mistakes in PAM preparation that reduce effectiveness and waste product. Follow this guide to maximize performance.

Golden Rules for PAM Preparation

1. Never Add Dry PAM Directly to Wastewater

Granular or powdered PAM must be fully dissolved in clean water first before being added to the treatment system. Direct addition causes:

  • PAM particles to clump into fish-eye gels that don’t dissolve
  • Wasted chemical — up to 50% loss in effectiveness
  • Clogged dosing pumps and pipelines
  • Uneven treatment results

2. Use Clean Water for Dissolving — Never Wastewater

Always use clean water (tap water or treated water) to prepare PAM solutions. The water should be at normal ambient temperature (15-30°C / 59-86°F).

  • Below 5°C (41°F): Dissolution is very slow — avoid if possible
  • Above 40°C (104°F): Accelerates polymer degradation — reduces effectiveness
  • Strong acids, strong alkalis, or high-salinity water are NOT suitable for PAM preparation

3. Optimal Solution Concentration: 0.1% – 0.3%

This means 1g to 3g of PAM powder per 1 liter of water.

  • For large daily consumption with small mixing tank → use higher concentration (0.3%)
  • For very high molecular weight PAM → use lower concentration (0.1%)
  • If dosing equipment has poor dispersion → use lower concentration

4. Never Use Centrifugal Pumps to Transfer PAM Solution

Centrifugal pump blades rotate at high speed and will shear the polymer chains, destroying the flocculation ability. Use progressive cavity pumps (screw pumps) or diaphragm pumps instead.

Recommended PAM Dosage Rates

Application Anionic PAM Cationic PAM Nonionic PAM
Municipal wastewater 2-5 mg/L 3-8 mg/L 1-3 mg/L
Industrial wastewater 5-15 mg/L 5-20 mg/L 3-10 mg/L
Sludge dewatering 2-5 kg/ton dry sludge
Paper making 0.5-2 kg/ton paper 1-3 kg/ton paper
Mining / Coal washing 3-8 g/m³ 2-5 g/m³

Step-by-Step PAM Dissolution Process

  1. Fill the mixing tank with the required volume of clean water
  2. Start the mixer at slow speed (60-100 rpm) — too fast will shear the polymer
  3. Slowly and evenly sprinkle PAM powder onto the water surface while mixing
  4. Continue mixing for 40-60 minutes until the solution is fully homogeneous (no visible gel particles)
  5. Let the solution age for 15-30 minutes before use for best results
  6. Use the prepared solution within 24 hours (cationic) to 48 hours (anionic)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Adding water to dry PAM (always add PAM to water, not the reverse)
  • ❌ Using hot water to “speed up” dissolution (degrades the polymer)
  • ❌ Mixing too fast (causes polymer chain breakage)
  • ❌ Storing prepared solution for too long (loses viscosity and performance)
  • ❌ Using the same tank without cleaning between batches (cross-contamination)
