Industrial Wastewater Treatment for Palm Oil Mills – POME Coagulation Guide

Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) Treatment Solutions

Palm oil production generates highly concentrated wastewater known as POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent), presenting significant treatment challenges. Hydrochemix provides specialized chemical solutions for efficient and cost-effective POME treatment.

POME Characteristics

Parameter Typical Range Challenge
BOD 25,000-65,000 mg/L 100x stronger than domestic sewage
COD 45,000-120,000 mg/L High organic load
Suspended Solids 20,000-60,000 mg/L Requires coagulation
Oil and Grease 4,000-8,000 mg/L Emulsion breaking needed
Temperature 70-85C Requires heat-resistant chemicals
pH 3.5-5.0 Needs pH adjustment or acid-tolerant coagulants

Hydrochemix POME Treatment Program

Stage 1: Primary Coagulation with PAC

Our high-basicity PAC 30% is formulated to perform effectively at elevated temperatures (70-85C) typical of POME discharge. The spray-dried powder dissolves rapidly and achieves 80-95% suspended solids removal in properly designed primary clarifiers.

Stage 2: Flocculation with Anionic PAM

High molecular weight (15-20 million) anionic PAM enhances floc formation and settling velocity, reducing retention time in treatment ponds by 30-50%.

Stage 3: Sludge Dewatering with Cationic PAM

POME sludge is high in organic content and difficult to dewater. Our cationic PAM with 30-50% charge density achieves superior cake solids in belt press and decanter centrifuge applications.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Malaysian DOE Industrial Effluent Regulation 2009: BOD < 100 mg/L discharge standard
  • Indonesian PROPER Program: Blue and Gold rating requirements
  • RSPO Principles and Criteria: New planting procedure (NPP) wastewater management

Case Study: Malaysian Palm Oil Mill (60 MT/hr)

  • PAC dosage: 600 mg/L for primary clarification
  • Anionic PAM: 2 mg/L for secondary polishing
  • Results: 95% TSS removal, 85% COD reduction, pond retention reduced from 120 to 80 days
